About The Open Universalist
Many of us are cautious about labels, me included. When people ask me what I believe regarding God, I say that I am a christian which leads to what denomination I am. I always find that one tough to answer. If I used a common denomination there would be less to say because most of us have a basic idea of what denominations believe outside of details. If I say I am a Christ follower (or worse, a follower of Paul) people just stare and say, yeah, we established that, but what denomination. Declaring yourself a non-denominational christian is basically declaring a denomination. At Dale Carnegie class we learned the 2 minute speech, which does work but when you throw in the that you believe God will save all men those 2 minutes are either going to be the end of a short conversation or the beginning of a long explanation! Nothing against Unitarians but that is very far from my beliefs, unfortunately, Unitarians seem to have the market covered regarding the term universalist. There are christian universalists, evangelical universalists, universal reconciliationist, believers in the greater hope, and no doubt more. Do we need another "ist" or "ism"? Probably not but I finally feel the need to label myself, I am an open universalist. I googled it and did not see this term, at least in the first few pages. I am not making an attempt to coin a new belief system, it is just a name that wraps up my beliefs in a simple way. Now if someone asks and they are interested I can explain why, if not, maybe they will google it and land here.
